Reflection on Leadership Journey-Free-Samples-Myassignmenthelp.com

Question: Write a reflection Reflection on Leadership Jounrey. Answer: Brief Introduction Leadership for me is both art and a practical skill encompassing the ability of the individual or organziation to lead or guide other individuals, teams and the entire organziation. Leaders set the path for the entire organization and set examples for the employees by leading from front(Northouse, 2018). They always have a clear vision for the organziation and they create and develop team aroud the same visison. It is often seen that despite having a clear visison, leaders fail to deliver results, it primarliy happens because they fail to use the guiding principles of the management (Barney, 2014). Reflection on Leadership Jounrey I have been workiing with Amazon for over 5 years as the customer success manager for its digital and social interaction at the Australian office. The team was small and comprised of 10 people whose major goal was to focus on social listening, create strategies to ensure the brand awarness and product penetration. Another major KRA was to do a predctive analysis of customer shopping pattern by noticing their online behaviour. My Avid interest in e-commerce and digtal tools of marketing pushed me to understand in depth the process followed at Amazon, and I was doing exceptionally well in my field. My immediate manager, who was apparenlty closed to Jeff Bezos realised my potential and promoted me as the digital marketing manager for the entire team, it was by far one of the most memorable day of my life. Ever since, my life changed and I got more and more involved in creating strategies in and around the diigtal platform and was constantly hanging around with a lot of decisison makers at Amazon. Key Event Expereince I have had really great expereinces working at Amazon, but there are few which changed my outlook towards leadership. I was attending one of the Annual conference of the biggest internet and tech companies in the world, companies like Alibaba, E-Bay, Google, Facebook, Apple, Smasung and qualcomm were part of this conference. I got the opportunity to listen to the great visionaries and minds at work. At the conference, for the very fist time, I got the opportunity to meet Jeff Bezos and hear out his views, live in front of the amazing audience, the feeling is beyond any comparison. At the conference Jeff Bezos mentioned that he wants Amazon to focus only and only on its customers and money will follow on its own. He had a visison for Amazon, he wanted the company to become the most CUSTOMER-CENTRIC company in the world. It was really breathtaking to know how deeply he cared about Amazon customers, he wanted the company to build all its process, policies, procedures and technology in a nd around the customer and to give them maximum benefit. Jeff mentioned If we take care of our customers, the customers will take care of its stakeholders . Hearing all these words from one of the visionary of the present times, who built a company from scratch and at present is one of the highest valued company in the world is motivating in itself. This particular event or moment made me realize that if I tweaked the digital marketing strategies towards customer, my work will be done and I would be able to contribute to the organziation. Ever since, before implementing any strategy or a new process, I personally put myself in the shoes of customers and accoridng create a strategy which will benefit me, The Customers. My team grew from 10-20 in a span of 20 years, and I followed particiative type of leadership. Amazon is highly decentralized in nature, which provides opportunity for people like me to take their own decision. I always have involved my team in all of my decisions, I took their feedback, engaged in brainstorming sessions with them and coherently reached a solution. I would definitely not boast, but my ability to connect with my team mates made me extremly lovable by the team and they valued the suggestions I gave to them. Hence, I would descirbe my leadership style to be based on the feeling of mutual respect, employee empowerment and participative in nature. MBTI Analysis I never performed the famous Myers-Briggs Type Indicator personality test, until recently, when I was considered to be sent to Amazon headquarters at Seattle to receive further training on Leadership competencies. On taking the MBTI test I was a little amused with the result, it was one area by which I was taken aback. My result of the assessment was ESTJ, wherein the alphabets stood for; Extroversion, Sensing, Thinking and Judging. It was no brainer for Extroversion, I like talking to people, I am a peoples person and not fearful of public speaking, I make connect with people easily which makes me highly extrovert in nature. I am sensing in nature, my belief is that I focus on attention to details, which helps me in making a better analysis of the situation, I dont build a big picture around the future possibilities, and rather I take things one at a time. I am a data miner, I believe in data rather than the theory behind the data, logic drives me, hence I am thinking in nature. The last point which shocked me to the very core is judging, in comparison to perception. In my opinion I take time to make decision and it is based on a careful analysis of the situation. However, the MBTI test did not predict so. Still, the test was extremely helpful in determining how my subconscious mind works and what kind of person I am; it certainly helped me in brushing my leadership style. Colleague Feedback At Amazon, human resources followed a 360 degree balanced feedback process, which facilitated the review of a person by everyone in the team, comprising of the seniors and juniors. I was really glad and amazed to read out the review of one of my colleagues, who was working in the organization before me and is still a part of my team. He mentioned my leadership style to be highly encouraging, participative and visionary in nature. In one of the paragraphs he mentioned how I resolved a particular conflict; he appreciated my accommodating style of conflict resolution. He also mentioned how I would turn the Monday blues at the office by sharing some inspiring story with the entire team, driving motivation in people. I was also mentioned as a visionary because of my abilities to predict the future state of digital and create strategies which will suit the audience segment at Amazon. One of the challenges identified by the colleague which I faced in my journey was, turning people down or f iring them. He mentioned that I am a soft spoken person and face big difficulties in firing a member of the team. I strongly agree with them, I nurtured the team, made them into a family and if someone is unable to perform at their best, I dont fire them, neither I told them anything. I always involved the human resource department to convey the message; this is certainly one of the areas of improvement. Another thing which he pointed out was, that I was a hard worker, once I step inside the office premises, I used to get so engrossed with my work that completely lose track of time, due to this level of engagement the entire team suffered, because they respected me so much, that they thought if they would leave before me it would definitely be a sign of disrespect. Influence of Culture on Leadership I strongly believe that organizational and national culture has a huge role to play in successful leadership. For example, Jeff Bezos leadership style is known to be charismatic, he was a born leader, had traits to be a great leader and he was quick to respond to the changing scenarios which also made him a visionary leader. His leadership was based on customer, he wanted the company to be customer-centric, thus in all his interaction with the employees he always wanted them to focus on customer-centricity. Thus, the entire organization, in all its office was having a culture where they cared the maximum about the biggest stakeholders, the customers. All innovations, tech changes, policies revolved around the customers reflecting the culture of the leadership on the entire organization. Amazon is spread across 18 countries which make it a truly global organization, the national culture does affect the leadership, as Amazon believes its global expansion strategy to be Go global and th ink local. Thus the company prefers to hire leaders from the country rather than from the headquarters proving that the leadership in influenced by the national culture. The culture of the nation influences the leadership immensely and affects their decision making process (Bolman Deal, 2017). Communication Skills for Relationship Building I have been very vocal in communication and have always followed openness in communication while communicating a topic of concern or to make any announcement. I always believed, the more the employees know about the processes, change, policies or any modification in the companys policies, they can provide their valuable contribution to help the organization. Another benefit of practicing openness in communication is that the employees dont indulge in grapevine activities, spreading rumours or gossips, as beforehand they know everything. It also helps in building trust with the employees and all of them contribute towards the growing momentum to reach the goal of business sustainability (Whetten Cameron, 2014). Communication is also a great tool when it comes to handling cultural bias, people are really not open coming from a different culture, thus if the company follows openness in communication, the cultural bias can be easily removed from the global organization(DuBrin, 2015). Leadership Models As I mentioned earlier that leadership is both an art and application of practical skill, there are various styles of leadership which leaders across the world pursue. In order to give comprehensiveness to the report, understanding of different leadership style is extremely important (Klenke, 2016). Autocratic leadership is the style which revolves around the leader or the boss; he takes decision on his own and does not consider his subordinates in decision making. He believes in communicating direction and decision to the team without effective consultation. In this type of leadership there is hardly any room for flexibility, the entire process is very rigid (Certo, 2015). Democratic leadership is one which involves the subordinates in making decision, the leader considers all the stakeholders in taking a decision, which is very healthy for the organization and also acts as a motivation tool for them(Hendricks, Taylor Yasuhara, 2016). It is personally my favourite leadership style and I try to follow it in my daily conduct at business. Another style which is hugely popular is the strategic leadership approach, under this the leader focuses on the individuals who share the same belief as that of leader, people who resonate with high performance, high team and high organization becomes the inner circle of leader and he consults them in making decision(Priest Gass, 2017). A lot of leaders like Steve jobs, Jeff Bezos follow transformational leadership, in this style the leader initiates the changes in the organization, groups, oneself and the team, and he leads from the front and motivates employees to perform at their best. In transactional leadership ,the leader follow a simple process, he motivates and rewards the people who are doing good and simply criticizes people who are not doing good in the organization. This type of leadership has been under a lot of flak for criticizing its employees (Lussier Achua, 2015). These are some of the styles of leadership which are present in the macro-environment and one adopts a style which suits his personality and the need of the organization. Conclusion Hence the reflection can be concluded by saying, effective leadership is extremely critical for the success of a business organization, a great leader can take the company to the Zenith of success and a bad leader can destroy the entire company (Antonakis Day, 2017). The expectation out of a leader is to motivate its employees, set examples for them, take challenges, be visionary, engage employees in decision making and lead them from front(Hersey, Blanchard Johnson, 2017). Chapter 6- Activity: Discuss whether Kylies reaction to her situation is the way most teenagers would 0 respond. Discuss how the class would have dealt with Tees. Could Tom have done anything Tot help her? Activity 1- All Individuals react In a different way, there Is no average way to respond to hidden away; others block it out and move on. In her situation where she meets new friends and Just tries to start a new life to fit in and forget I think its a healthier way to respond even though the rebellious attitude she has adopted is impacting on her and others negatively she is at least confronting it. Activity 2- In this situation Tom could have tried to help and become more understanding but he himself is trying to find a way to deal with his emotions and past. Chapter 8- In small groups, compare Tom how is emotionally at this stage with how he was at the beginning of the story. Is there any change? At the beginning of the story he was cared and confused as he was pushing his car out the driveway to escape the gaze of the neighbors. This is slightly contrasted with his more developed character by chapter 8 where he starts to put things together and realize why everything happened. He is still emotionally unstable because of the event and what had happened to him, his family and the community but his understanding and progression of the realization of it seems to be developing through the next few chapters. He now takes control, gets along with life, accepting yet still hiding and burying it below his new life. Gets back into footy ND running, his old life. JOURNEY INTO THE WORLD) My short Journey to next year. At this stage in my life with study, work, social life, hobbies, adulthood and other interests its hard to hold it all on one plate, to balance the workload and find the priorities. The Journey mainly involves study up until the end of the HAS hopefully, if I can find a routine and beyond that its all about work, friends, alcohol and parties. Len- between those I should be looking into my future as fair as nun and career goes but at the moment my main concerns are on going well in school but not forgetting the things that make me happy. Although all these things are most important for my study, work, school and sleep. To still have a sense of adventure in-between all the hassles of senior life. Chapter 9 the legend of the Brenna Brothers In the last 2 years these two remarkable brothers have almost carried their footy team towards the win. Along with the help of their teammates and rivals to motivate them they have blown away the competition with their brotherly instinct out on the field. They say the strongest bond is love, but there is one stronger than Just love, love and brotherhood. In the recent season that has Just passed the two have said heir intention for the next season, to make it a trisects, no team has done it before and I have, their family has and the community has high expectations for their future. Chapter II- 6 lines on reasonable assumption It wasnt a reasonable assumption by tom but because of his state of mind in the time this line was said its understandable. He didnt take into account the opinions and perspectives of the people in the town and his familys view of how they should react. It was more of an emotional response than a conscious one, making the reaction usually more heated and unstable. Lines on a discussion of dawns future. For Daniel I believe his future is looking to be that of progressive. From the news of his condition in goal and how he is helping other inmates he is already on the way to his new life outside of goal. I believe that his journey will have foundations around his family and final maintenance by the people he posit ions himself around. Chapter 12 6 lines to say I dont think it is fair for the whole family to be blamed for Daniels actions but that is the reality with their circumstance in their community. I think from what has been stated up to this point that the blame shouldnt go towards the whole family. That is what one persons downfall. Although I think it shouldnt be shared by the family its almost better that way so we can see the development and reaction of each individual character. Chapter 13 Kylie speech Good morning my fellow Chill classmates. Today I am going to talk to you about a very serious Chapter 14 Journal entries. (3) Journal entry 1- Going out for dinner, I thought itll be a change from eating hard boiled meatloaf all joining us though. Crisis, the goddess who walked among us. I was so nervous. The start of the night went salamander, I was interrupted naked and burnt as I was herring, but in a way it was good. The rest of the night went well, Just Jokes and laughs. Id forgotten all about my nervousness of the glistening beauty of Crisis and it Just seemed like it was a normal dinner with mates. It was an amazing night, seemed like old times, Entry 2- Heading off to the footy camp I had very low expectations for the resulting week but it didnt mean we couldnt have a bit of a social thing. These boys couldnt catch a cold but it started out to be a lot of fun. I tried teaching them a few moves that Daniel and I use to do, killer tactics they were but it didnt work out. I was beginning to get bait upset because from the years past footy camps were all about learning new things, refining our skills and fitness. This excuse for a gathering was mostly the opposite. My attitude must have been showing because dad pulled me over and started to have a word. Entry 3- After dad had a very meaning full conversation, he almost had a tear in his eye. For the next 4 days I worked those boys through all the training runs Dan and I use to do, teaching them new tricks and refining their skills as much as I could. After the conversation dad made me realize that the game wasnt all about winning and eating the shield but doing it as a team and enjoying it. Tom b- 1st person flash backs non- chromo accident obstacles- mother, kylie sport/girlfriend transition change, obstacles, transformation, responsibility, choice, identity. ROT- the kings of summer Tommy B Chapter 16- He was on a self-destruct mission. (p. 229) In a class discussion students could share ideas on this topic. Do they believe that Daniels parents should have been also charged for taking a passive resistance towards his behavior? What could have been done to help Daniel prior to the accident? Are liquor laws the same for underage drinking in all countries? What influence do friends have when someone is going off the rails? Question 1- no I dont. They were having a hard ti me controlling their sons behavior like many parents do around the same age as Dan. It is completely understandable and excusable. Question 2 taken a deep breath, and thought about what has happened. Maybe taken a walk to relax and sweat the alcohol out, sober up. Question 3 no, some countries take it very seriously having harsh penalties such as probation and steep fines. Australia is quite relaxed about the matter and consider it within our culture I believe. Although this is my opinion there are still Judges and officers that take it very seriously and go beyond the laws to teach the offended a lesson. Question 4 depends what sort of attitude and frame of mind they are in. If they are negotiable and sociable friends can have a very big influence. Calming them down or sometimes heating the situation. But while they are totally negotiable friends advice can be easily deflected. Chapter 17- The siren rang for full-time, the score still 9-7 but you wouldve thought we were the winners. (p. 251) Activity 1 Students are to write a sporting column for a local newspaper describing the match. Vive got to ring him. (p. 253) Activity 2:0 What would Tom have said to Matt? Working in pairs, write a script of this phone call. Activity 1- One of the most intimidated matches for the season Chapter 18- l think Ill call you Harvey, she crooned. Because Saint Harvey was famous for his miracles.

Studying the brain

Studying the brain Introduction When it comes to studying the brain what must be understood is that though science has enabled us to study what parts of the brain are used for a particular action it is still relatively unknown how they function and the origins of the interconnections that are responsible for the rapid fire and almost instantaneous movements that people take for granted today (Armstrong, 2006).Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Studying the brain specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More For example, there mere act of typing on a keyboard involves the use of the action skill required for hand-eye coordination, the retrieval mechanisms responsible for coordinating what one needs to remember regarding the placement of the hands of the keyboard and finally the coordination of several systems involving working memory and long term memory in order to create the phenomenon known as thought which is responsible for the formation of the concepts and ideas that go into any written work (Armstrong, 2006). It is due to this that numerous fields of study have come about specifically to answer such questions yet this creates a second challenge; namely the fact that each particular field of academic research (i.e. psychology, neurobiology, etc.) has their own leading and contending theories which all have various plausible arguments and counterarguments that attempt to explain how the brain works resulting in confusing state of affairs where researchers and students alike have had to shift through the sheer amount of theoretical underpinnings regarding the brain in order to find some semblance of what they believe is the most plausible explanation as to how the brain works (Nathan et al., 2011). Which is the Biggest Obstacle? As technology improves it can be expected that our understanding regarding the inner workings of the brain will improve as well. It is based on this that the greatest challenge posed for und erstanding the inner workings of the brain is not the limits imposed by present day technology (since it will improve over time) but rather the sheer amount of theoretical underpinnings in various academic fields that through one method or another attempt to highlight their processes as being the best way in understanding the intricacies found within the human brain (Pham et al., 2009). As a student, wading through the sheer amount of literature and theory on the subject of the human brain has not been easy, I can only imagine the problems experienced by researchers and in fact it comes as no surprise that even more theoretical foundations are being built to this day since apparently an understanding of how the brain works is apparently based on the perceptions of the researcher rather than an all encompassing fact that is undeniable. Positive/Negative Issues Regarding studies into the Inner Workings of the Brain One of the more interesting applications for further study into the hu man brain is the possibility of actually recording human thoughts and memories. This could theoretically enable an individual to backup their memories from a particular point in time effectively enabling them to live forever within a digital environment since technically the mind is nothing more than an amalgamation of memories (Gordon, 2002). On the other hand you have to take into consideration the possibility that just as this method enables an individual to potentially live forever this also creates the possibility of a profound torture that can lasts hundreds of years. Homework Chapter 5 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Homework Chapter 5 - Essay Example Explain how air pressure tendency can be a useful indicator of future weather. Answer: Air pressure tendency can be a useful indicator of weather forecast as it is the change in air pressure over a specific time interval, such as several hours. Falling or rising of air pressure signals the approach of stormy or fair weather respectively. Aneroid barometers are usually equipped with second pointer that serves as reference marker for setting current reading. The user can observe the new pressure reading taken at a later time and compare it with reading earlier set on second pointer to determine air pressure tendency. The barograph then provides a continuous trace of air pressure variations with time, making it easier to determine air pressure tendency and forecasting weather. Question 5. Air is a compressible mixture of gases. How does this property of air affect the rate at which air pressure decreases with increasing altitude? Answer: Air is a compressible mixture of gases, so its vo lume and density are variable. The pull of gravity compresses the atmosphere so that the maximum air density is at the earth’s surface. So, the atmosphere’s gas molecules are closely spaced at the earth’s surface and the spacing between molecules increases with increasing altitude. Thus, the number of gas molecules per unit volume (air density) decreases with increasing altitude. Question 6.

Global Financial Crisis on Japan Country Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Global Financial Crisis on Japan Country - Essay Example Global financial crisis also reduced the flow of money in the country’s economy. During the economic downturn, many Japanese opted to cut down their shopping budgets. This greatly affected the revenues of businesses that already had less ability to access credit. Further more investors became weary of putting their money into companies. This too had a severe impact on businesses. The stock market business collapsed, making many business men lose a large portion of their investment (Needle, 2010, p. 476). Companies found it hard to survive under unconducive environment caused by the economic crisis. The senior managers of the largest Japan realized the need to cut cost for the sake of their company’s survival. Labor being one of the business greatest expenses, many people lost their jobs. The largest companies eliminated job opportunities on a large scale leaving many Japanese jobless (Batten& Szilagyi, 2011, p. 375). Other small businesses simply found out that they could not survive the adverse effect of the global economic crisis. These companies opted to close down their activities, leaving too many of their workers jobless. During the global financial crisis, many companies also reduced their charitable activities across Japan. This act eliminated chances of many Japanese to access resources they desperately needed. Many of them were unable to access clean water and security (Paul, 2010, p. 223). Following the effect of the global market turmoil, the FSA has initiated several measures aimed at regulating the functioning of financial intermediation. FSA has initiated a new capital injection scheme, to enhance proper flow of capital in the country as it was before the downturn (Paul, 2010, p. 254). FSA has also introduced new regulatory framework for credit rating agencies. It has considerably strengthened the disclosure requirement for financial firms with respect to their exposure to securitization

Health Sanitation Practices Essay Example for Free

Health Sanitation Practices Essay * a protected well or a developed spring with an outlet but without a distribution system * indicated for rural areas * serves 15-25 households; its outreach is not more than 250 m from the farthest user * yields 40-140 L/ min Level II (Communal Faucet or Stand Posts) * With a source, reservoir, piped distribution network and communal faucets * Located at not more than 25 m from the farthest house * Delivers 40-80 L of water per capital per day to an average of 100 households * Fit for rural areas where houses are densely clustered Level III (Individual House Connections or Waterworks System) * With a source, reservoir, piped distributor network and household taps * Fit for densely populated urban communities * Requires minimum treatment or disinfection Proper Excreta and Sewage Disposal Program EHS sets policies on approved types of toilet facilities: Level I * Non-water carriage toilet facility – no water necessary to wash the waste into receiving space e. g. pit latrines, reed odorless earth closet. * Toilet facilities requiring small amount of water to wash the waste into the receiving space e.g. pour flush toilet aqua privies Level II * On site toilet facilities of the water carriage type with water-sealed and flush type with septic vault/tank disposal. Level III * Water carriage types of toilet facilities connected to septic tanks and/or to sewerage system to treatment plant. Objective: The objective of this study is to determine sanitation practices and preferences in sitio ganha-an.By examining differences between current practices and preferences, the study assesses if the communities are satisfied with their current sanitation options and if there is a demand for increased sanitation coverage and better facilities. Water Supply. The major problem for poor people in most countries is access to safe water in adequate quantity, with reasonable convenience, and at an affordable cost. Solutions include local grants to install household gutters and rainwater capture tanks; local wells designed to resist pollution; and small networks of water points served by a local well, borehole, or spring. The supply problems of major cities require integrated approaches that combine demand management, leak repair, backflow prevention, wastewater reuse, and the efficient, sustainable exploitation of sources. Solid Waste Disposal. The interdependence of sanitation aspects is illustrated by the need for adequate solid waste removal to prevent the blockage of rainwater drains. Collection of refuse in hot climates must be frequent since piles attract flies and rats, and it should rely more on local labor-intensive methods rather than on expensive trucks. For the operation to be successful requires close cooperation between the users and providers of the service, and financing must come either from municipal recurrent funds and/or user fees. Excreta Disposal. Large sewerage infrastructure projects tend to be too expensive for the vast majority of urban and rural people in developing countries, and it may be impossible to build a sewage network infrastructure in congested, narrow streets. On-site options include latrines, pourflush toilets, and septic tanks. There should be evaluated at each location according to needs and priorities. As water use grows in villages and towns, wastewater from washing and bathing (sullage) can be cost-effectively handled by a separate drainage system coupled to on-site excreta disposal. Garbage is a never ending cycle. Every day each household produces a significant amount of trash. The more we consume the more garbage we incur. Garbage disposal has been a monumental problem ever since. ( Yapchiongco, 2012) For a lack of historic time series of reliable nationally representative drinking water quality data, the JMP cannot report on the actual water safety aspect of the MDG drinking water target. The proxy indicator used in the global survey methodology – â€Å"use of improved drinking water sources† – does not guarantee that the quality of drinking water consumed by people meets the standards for safe drinking water as proposed in the WHO Guidelines for Drinking water Quality (WHO, 2011). Pollution from domestic and industrial sources, geogenic contamination, and poor sanitation and hygiene all threaten the safety of drinking water sources. In recognition of these threats, many drinking water supply operators and regulators are adopting an integrated risk assessment and management approach that takes risk spots and events into account along the chain of events from source to tap. Strategies include quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA), sanitary inspections, the application of health-based targets and water safety plans (WSPs). The practice of household water treatment and safe storage (HWTS) can help improve water quality at the point of consumption, especially when drinking water sources are distant, unreliable or unsafe. However, HWTS is a stopgap measure only and does not replace the obligation of a service provider to provide access to safe drinking water. It is intended for people who have no access to improved drinking water sources at all, for people with access to improved sources outside of their home or premises (i.e. when contamination can occur during transport and storage), for people with unreliable piped supplies who have to store water to bridge the gaps between deliveries, and for people in emergency situations. People relying on unimproved drinking water sources who apply an appropriate household water treatment method are still not considered to have sustainable access to safe drinking water. Doing so would absolve the providers of their responsibility to provide safe drinking water and in effect transfer this responsibility to consumers. http://www.wssinfo.org/fileadmin/user_upload/resources/report_wash_low.pdf

Edith Wharton Essay -- Literature

Edith Wharton once wrote, â€Å"Life is the saddest thing next to death (Johnson and Zimmerman).† She is also said to have been â€Å"among the first American writers to gain a sense of the world as an evil place (Johnson and Zimmerman).† Edith Newbold Jones was considered to be a â€Å"product of New York City† (Johnson and Zimmerman) and was born on January 24, 1862 (a day she tried to keep secret (â€Å"Edith Wharton Biography† bookrags.com)) in the wealthier side of New York City. It is said that â€Å"her privileged lifestyle lead to many of her finest works (â€Å"Edith Wharton†).† However, even though her last name was Jones, there was a slight suspicion that her tutor growing up was her real father, and Edith believed this (â€Å"Edith Wharton Biography† bookrags.com). The ever-popular term â€Å"Keeping up with the Joneses† is also â€Å"a phrase coined about Edith Wharton’s family (â€Å"Edith Wharton†).† Edith Wharton was born just a few years before the end of the Civil War. When it ended in 1865, many things began to change for everyone, and that was one thing that Wharton’s family strongly disliked—changes (Johnson and Zimmerman). Therefore, in 1866, her family traveled to Europe and visited Italy, Germany, France, and Spain (Johnson and Zimmerman), and this was where â€Å"she spent much of her childhood (Johnson and Zimmerman).† In fact they stayed there for about six years after the war (â€Å"Edith Wharton Biography† Bio.) In 1872, she and her family came back to New York, but they spend their summers away from the city in Newport, Rhode Island. Then in 1873, Walter Pater publishes his â€Å"Studies in the History of the Renaissance (Davis â€Å"Timeline†).† This is an important fact because in her novel The Age of Innocence she writes, â€Å"Newland Archer prided himse... ...053&it=r&p=LitRC&sw=w>. Rizal’s Life

When the book starts, Ibarra is returning to the Philippines after a 7 year absence, and he is reunited with his lover, Maria Clara. He also learns the details of his father’s death, which was caused by one of his father’s political opponents in his home town of Binondo, Manila. Father Damaso is one of the religious/political figures in Binondo who dislikes Ibarra’s dad. By accusing Ibarra’s dad of being a heretic, and by using the death of a local student to make him look bad, Father Damaso turned the community against Ibarra’s dad, and had him thrown in jail where he got sick and died. Ibarra’s father was disgraced further when his body was thrown into the lake while workers were transporting him between burial sites. After learning about the atrocities committed against his father, Ibarra does not seek revenge, but instead decides to build a school, which was something his father had always planned to do. By building the school, Juan Crisostomo Ibarra shows that he is genuinely concerned about the education and welfare of the Filipino people, because he puts the political squabbling aside in order to help the community. Ibarra is nearly assassinated at the school’s opening celebrations, but he is saved by a man named Elias. After the assassination attempt, Ibarra is thrown into jail for a crime that he did not commit. Elias again assists Ibarra by helping him escape from prison. As they are absconding in a boat, Ibarra hides under some leaves. Elias jumps into the water in an attempt to fool the guards, but his plan fails and he is shot by the guards and left for dead. Since the guards think that they shot Ibarra, they cease their pursuit of the boat he is hiding on, and he escapes unharmed. Reflection Base on my reflection the book Noli Me Tangre is about the problems and injustices experienced by the fictional character, Juan Crisostomo Ibarra. All of the problems he experiences are brought about by corrupt officials in the Spanish government of his home town. And he revenge because for the death of his father. Insights One of Jose Rizal’s goals in writing the story was to bring attention to the corruption present in the Spanish controlled government of the Philippines. Noli Me Tangre exposed corruption, created widespread controversy, and gave native Filipinos a sense of unity. Even until now there still a corruption that we experiencing resulting of difficulty and poverty in life and in our country. Hope that there might a solution of this corrupt country. El Filibusterismo Simoun, a mysterious and powerful jeweller who is in good graces with the Captain General plots a coup d’ etat against the Spanish colonial government. He secretly abets the abuses committed against the natives in the hope of stirring them to rise up in revolt. To weaken the regime, he encourages corruption, using his immense wealth to foment injustice and provoke massive unrest. Unknown to all, Simoun is Juan Crisostomo Ibarra, a man who had been wrongfully accused of rebellion and condemned in a plot instigated by his enemies including a friar who had unchaste feelings for his fiancee, Maria Clara. Everybody thought Ibarra had been killed as a fugitive, but in truth he had escaped, enriched himself abroad and has returned to the Islands to avenge himself. He plans to take Maria Clara who, believing Ibarra is dead, had entered the convent. In the course of his plans, Simoun comes into contact with young idealistic Filipinos whom he wants to enlist to his cause. One of these is Basilio, one of the few who know his secret. He had been adopted by Kapitan Tiyago, a wealthy landowner and father of Maria Clara. Basilio is about to graduate as doctor of medicine and plans to marry Huli, his childhood sweetheart. Huli is the daughter of Kabesang Tales, a homesteader who had been dispossessed of his lands by the friars. Turned outlaw, Kabesang Tales and other victims of injustice have been enlisted by Simoun in his plan to overthrow the government. Another student, Isagani, dreams of a progressive future for his country but his fiancee, Paulita, who shares his aunt Dona Victorina’s prejudices against the natives, is not interested in them. Simoun’s plot is aborted when he learns that Maria Clara had died at the convent. Student leaders who have been advocating the opening of an academy for the teaching of the Spanish language hold a party where they lampoon the friars. The next day, posters are found encouraging sedition, and those suspected of involvement are arrested, including Basilio. His foster father having died, obody intercedes for him, while the rich and influential are released. Meanwhile, Huli is killed in the church after she had sought the help of the parish priest for the release of Basilio. Due to this tragedy, her grandfather, Tandang Selo, joins the outlaws. Embittered by Maria Clara’s death, Simoun plans another coup to be staged at the wedding reception for Paulita, who has been engaged to another man: top government officials including the Captain general who are to attend would be blown away, the house being planted with explosives which will be detonated by a a device hidden in the lamp given as gift by Simoun to the newlyweds. Basilio, who has been released and now wants to take revenge is ordered by Simoun to lead in the uprising. At the appointed hour, the guests are terrified upon reading a note signed by Juan Crisostomo Ibarra; his signature is recognized by Father Salvi, the friar who lusted after Maria Clara. Before the lamp could explode, Isagani, who has been warned by Basilio about the plot, barges in and throws the lamp into the river. Isagani escapes. The uprising again fails to take off, and the armed followersof Simoun, deprived of leadership or devoid of vision, resort to banditry. The lawlessness that reigns in the countrysides leads to harsh measures by the government in its efforts to show it is in control. The plot at the wedding is finally traced to Simoun who escapes into a house near the ocean. After taking poison, he confesses to father Florentino, a Filipino priest, who tells him: â€Å"What is the use of independence if the slaves of today will be the tyrants of tomorrow? † After the death of Simoun, Father Florentino throws his treasure into the sea.

Poetry Analysis Essay

?One may try and seek a definition for poetry, but there is no correct answer. In fact, each person will have his own version for the definition of poetry. But that is the beauty of poetry, the same poem will have a unique meaning for each individual that reads it. The most fitting description for poetry comes from the character Pablo Neruda in Michael Radford’s 1994 film Il Postino: The Postman, â€Å"When you explain poetry it becomes banal. Better than any explanation is the experience of feelings that poetry can reveal to a nature open enough to understand it. † Poetry is so crucial to have in the world because of the functions poetry serves as, the special qualities poetry has, and life without poetry would simply be boring. ?Poetry can function as an epiphany, awakening, for someone or to express one’s feelings. After reading a strong piece of poetry one can feel a sudden growth in confidence to change something about their life or community. In Il Postino, the character Mario Ruoppolo has an epiphany after researching poetry with the poet Pablo Neruda. Mario found the confidence to stand up to the politician who was exploiting the people of the island. Mario also became a political activist for the communist party. Poetry also helped Mario express his love for poetry. After reading a lot of poetry, Mario found confidence within himself to make changes. The epiphany poetry gave him made Mario realize he had the ability to make a difference within himself and the community. Poetry cannot just act as a catalyst for an awakening but also as a channel to express inner feelings. Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poem â€Å"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways† expresses her love for her husband Robert Browning. Browning uses similes throughout the poem to express her love, â€Å"I love thee freely, as men strive for Right/ I love thee purely, as they turn to Praise. † Browning used poetry to express her forbidden love to her husband, whom she eloped with. Poetry can express other strong feelings the writer wishes to share. Poetry can be used to trigger an epiphany or to share one’s feelings. ?What is also great about poetry is that it allows writers to be creative, and to use special poetic qualities such as figures of speech or rhyme scheme. In â€Å"Young and Old† by Charles Kingsley he uses metaphors to describe the theme of aging. â€Å"When all the world is young, lad/ And all the trees are green†¦ When all the world is old, lad/ And all the trees are brown. † His successful use of metaphors paints a picture throughout the poem of being young to growing old. The use of metaphors helps the reader grasp the concept Kingsley was portraying. Rhyme scheme is a special quality poets use to make poems have a playful twist. In Philip Larkin’s poem â€Å" This Be the Verse†, the rhyming brings down the serious tone of the poem. â€Å"The fuck you up, your mum and dad/ They may not mean to, but they do. / They fill you with the faults they had/ And add some extra, just for you. † The rhyming at the end of every other line puts a playful twist on the serious tone and the strong language used. Poetry lets the writer be creative in how he wants the use poetic devices throughout the poem. ?Most importantly, try imagining life without poetry. If you’re having difficulty, try imagining the most popular genre of poetry, music. Music is a part of everyone’s life and is used in various ways such as entertainment or to cope with hardships. Music is a form of poetry with a musical beat to go along the lyrics. Artists use their music to cope with strong emotions. For example, British musician Adele used her music as a way to manage her break-up with her boyfriend. Songwriting has the same elements of poetry in the sense of expressing one’s feelings like Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Musicians also write music to shine some light on the corruption in politics. Rapper Immortal Technique uses his music to show how America’s policy making is strongly influenced by the military and corporations. He encourages society to confront policy makers to please the average working person, not the wealthiest people in society. He uses his music to inspire people to make changes like Neruda influenced Mario to have an epiphany in Il Postino.

Modernist Angst- Misogyny essays

Modernist Angst- Misogyny essays The position of women in society has been exemplified in literature as misogynist, and although things have started to change in the last hundred years or so, one sees that women are still portrayed in a poor light. In essence, the idea of women being contemptuous, having a blatant disregard for authority dates back to Eve. Eve coaxed Adam to eat from the tree of knowledge and for such defiance, God punished both Adam and Eve, however, it was Eves punishment that cursed her (and the rest of womankind) to the role of a scapegoat. It is not hard to imagine people routinely murmuring that it was Eves fault, that it is Eves fault, or that is it will always be Eves fault for the role of women and the decline of masculinity. As for men, they have been cursed to dominate the world with the role of a stolid breadwinner. Just as this bible story has not changed to create a better depiction of Eve as less beguiling, less evil, and more caring, neither have Modernist writers who have woven societal tales of social strife. The depiction of women as conniving and despicable has not come through more clearly anywhere than in the Modernist period where women were portrayed as the Dark Horses, the archetypal forces behind social chaos and self-affliction. The depiction of women as the Dark Horses is not just confined to British novels. The American satire by Edith Wharton, The House of Mirth, aptly founds itself on a series of social events that create the same Dark Horses. Indeed, most of the interaction between the characters in the novel happens not by coincidence but by planning. Everyone plans trips to the Bellomont knowing that they will spend their time gambling, and Lily, the main character, plans all of her trips with the intent of getting something out of someone. The various visits, then, are the grounds on which the entire social analyses and gossip take place. The...

Theres a Time for Tmesis

Theres a Time for Tmesis There’s a Time for Tmesis There’s a Time for Tmesis By Mark Nichol Tmesis is a linguistic device in which a word or phrase interrupts another word or phrase. (The word is a Greek term that refers to cutting.) Depending on the type of tmesis, it is either acceptable in formal usage or relegated to humorous and/or emphatic colloquialisms. Phrasing in which the preposition down is located within the verb phrase â€Å"turn down† in â€Å"Turn down that music,† as opposed to its placement in â€Å"Turn that music down,† is a standard form of tmesis, as are whatsoever and unbeknownst, in which, respectively, so is inserted in whatever and be is placed within an archaic form of unknown. (Interestingly, in some literary usage, a tmetic word is itself cloven, as in the biblical verse â€Å"He shall be punished, what man soever offendeth.†) By contrast, seemingly tmetic words such as notwithstanding and nevertheless do not qualify, because the framing syllables do not constitute words or set phrases. A form of tmesis often heard spoken spontaneously but best reconstructed for writing is a possessive phrase such as â€Å"the girl in the back row’s,† referring to something belonging to a girl sitting in a back row; the modifying phrase â€Å"in the back row† is artificially inserted between girl and the possessive s. â€Å"The book is the girl in the back row’s,† for example, should be recast as â€Å"The book belongs to the girl in the back row.† Informal tmetic usage is ubiquitous but discouraged in formal writing. Examples include â€Å"a whole nother† and â€Å"any old how† as intensifications of another and anyhow. Recently, however, this form of tmesis has been supplanted in popularity by a form formally known as expletive infixation, in which a profane or otherwise emphatic word is inserted into an adjective to fortify its impact, as in abso-frickin’-lutely and la-dee-frickin’-da. Another colloquial construction is the emphatic insertion of so in such statements as â€Å"I am so not going there.† These contemporary conversational habits have their place in transcriptions of casual dialogue and in light-hearted informal prose, but they’re intrusive in formal writing. Karama's Pizza & Samosa(resutrent) Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Karama's Pizza & Samosa(resutrent) - Assignment Example This essay will analyze the challenges facing business by using an example of Karam’s Pizza and Samoa restaurant. Karama’s Pizza and Samoa restaurant has been in operation for 3 years. The Pizza and Samosa restaurant are still running smoothly. This is because the menu is unusual. The management has introduced an Indian and Italian meal and the food is of high quality. For one to run a restaurant, creativity is inevitable (89). Karam shows his uniqueness by introducing an Indian and Italian meal in his men. Seemingly, the restaurants on northern and northeastern side of Karam’s restaurant do not make the Italian and Indian food because most customers flow from those areas. If an area does not offer a particular service, people move long distances to get the certain product. Contrary, Karam has some weaknesses in running of his business. After doing the research, he does not find out why people from the other directions do not come to his restaurant. Secondly, after learning that most of the customers were those who had free access to his delivery, Karam did not take any action to access more customers. Again, he only deals with cash and credit card consumers. Karam he has a lower percentage of credit sales in his business. These challenges can lead to break down of his business (121). He does not seem to make efforts to overcome the challenges. The best way in business to solve problems is to identify the problem and then attempt means to meet them. After carrying out his research, Karam would look for means to draw many customers from other areas. After discussing the issue with his wife and friends, Karim should apply these ideas to improve his business. It is advisable for one to take responsibility in business and immediate action in order to run the business successfully (215). Again, after his business exhibits success for three years, karam has to try other sources of income to improve it. These events would be a success in his
